Indian Railway flagged off first AC Double Decker Chair car from Bengal


The Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Rail Coach Factory (RCF) of the Indian Railways has  launched the first ever Indian double decker coach. The Railway minister 'Dinesh Trivedi', along with the union minister of state for shipping has flagged off the first air-conditioned (AC) double-decker chair-car train between Howrah and Dhanbad on 1October 2011. The coaches run on diesel traction and at speed of 110km/h for now. The train will consist of nine coaches, including seven AC double-decker chair-cars, with 128 seats in each coach. Sleeper-type double-decker trains are also expected by March 2012.


Feature of double decker train:

  • Stainless steel body.
  • High speed Y-Frame bogies with air springs suspension for superior ride
  • Face to face chairs  format
  • For  safety, fire retardant upholstery has been used in chairs.
  • Each coach can accommodate 128 passengers up from 78 passengers per coach.
  • Double Decker train can  run at a speed of 160kph.
